Imagine Santa Claus on a sleek, sporty motorcycle, his bulging sack of toys overflowing from the rear seat. That’s the image evoked by Steve Unverzagt as he collects toys for disadvantaged kids across the city. Though he doesn’t look a thing like Santa, the motorcycle-loving Unverzagt has worked to bring holiday cheer to disadvantaged Springfield kids for several years. He even has his biker buddies in on the action, donating toys and money for the Central Illinois Foodbank’s Kids Café. Kids Café provides safe after-school activities and serves hot meals to about 100 area children every weeknight. This is the second year the Springfield Milers BMW Motorcycle Club has been involved in the toy run, and this year, vice president Unverzagt says the group of about 85 riders from around central Illinois collected several thousand dollars and toys for about 150 kids. “The generosity of these guys is overwhelming,” Unverzagt says. “There’s such a need for this type of thing, especially around Christmas. If we can impact just one kid’s life in a positive way, then good on them.” To make a donation or to join the Springfield Milers, visit www.springfieldmilers.com or call Steve Unverzagt at 725- 4226.
