Protect yourself against the sun’s UV ray damage

Now that the temperature is dropping and the leaves are changing colors, our attention is shifting toward the fall. Beach trips and family cookouts have become happy memories. However, those memories could have a lingering effect on our skin. All of the times that we have spent outdoors in the sun over our lifetime become more visible as we age. Fine lines, wrinkles and dark spots are just some of the effects of long-term sun exposure.

Although some sun exposure is recommended for adequate vitamin D, it becomes a problem when we spend too much time in the sun, producing detrimental effects for our skin.

Sunscreen is the first and best line of defense for protecting skin against ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Further, primary prevention of sun damage in youth is the most effective means of protecting against skin cancers later in life. The sun’s UV rays damage the skin and can lead to sunburns and skin cancer. An appointment with a dermatologist for regular skin exams can prevent skin cancers, such as basal cell carcinoma and melanoma.

The visible light present with the UV light from the sun can worsen hyperpigmentation in the skin. For patients who are unhappy with the appearance of their skin, there are options to help keep it looking young and healthy. One of the most effective phototherapies available is the Sciton BroadBand ® Light. This technology treats skin conditions such as acne and discoloration from chronic sun exposure, including redness and pigmentation. Regular treatment with this device produces more youthfulappearing skin. The average treatment time is 12 to 15 minutes. Patients can resume their normal activities immediately after their treatment. One study from Stanford University found that Sciton BroadBand® Light treatments can change the expression of genes associated with skin aging, reversing the aging process in the skin.

Sciton BroadBand ® treatment can be combined with other cosmetic procedures, such as microneedling to restore youthful skin. SkinPen® is an FDA-cleared, medical-grade microneedling device that’s applicable to many unwanted conditions such as scarring, stretch marks, acne, fine lines and wrinkles. Thousands of microwounds produced during each session lead to increased production of collagen and elastin in your skin. Treatment times can vary from one to two hours, with minimal downtime.

Before opting for any procedure, consult with your dermatologist. They can guide you to the best options for your skin type and condition. We are pleased to bring innovative and effective combinations of aesthetic procedures and skin care regimens to the community, as our patients’ well-being is our utmost priority.
