Joint Replacement Camp

Designed for those who are considering or who have scheduled total hip or total knee replacement surgery. The Willis-Knighton Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Institute offers participants insight into the joint replacement process, from pre-admission planning to surgery, follow-up and rehabilitation. 4th Floor: Social Services Department This two-hour, hands-on workshop includes a 12-step skin care/make-up application lesson, demonstration of nail techniques and options for dealing with hair loss. Patients also use and take home complimentary cosmetic kits in their appropriate skin tones with helpful instruction booklets.

The Doctor is In: Top Health Concerns for Senior Adults

Mondays, 5:30 p.m. Oak Room at Tower at The Oaks The life expectancy of American adults has increased, with many living well beyond the age of 80. The Oaks of Louisiana is pleased to offer an overview of common health concerns that affect senior adults, with tips on how to prevent them or slow the progression. Guests may attend one or all of the lectures.

June 4 Arthritis: Robert Savory, MD Dr. Savory, a partner at Family Medical Center, will discuss arthritis, which can affect older people’s hips, knees, hands, spine and shoulders.

June 11 Osteoporosis: John Ferrell, MD Dr. Ferrell, a partner at The Orthopaedic Clinic, will focus on how osteoporosis or low bone mass affects adults over age 50.

June 18 Heart Disease: Jagan Beedupalli, MD Dr. Beedupalli, a partner at Willis-Knighton Cardiology, will discuss the importance of managing high blood pressure and cholesterol and will cover some innovative treatments for cardiac conditions such as atrial fibrillation.

June 25 Diabetes: Laura Kimball-Ravari, MD Dr. Kimball-Ravari, a partner at Endocrine & Thyroid Specialists, will focus on diabetes, its symptoms and warning signs as well as treatment options.

This month, Otto will discuss Daoism, which dates back 2,000 years in Chinese culture. Book Review The General’s Women

Guest Speaker: Jacqueline Gore, retired teacher

Tuesday, June 26, 3:30 p.m. Chapel at The Oaks Beloved reviewer Jacqueline Gore returns to The Oaks with an engaging review of Susan Wittig Albert’s novel “The General’s Women.” The book is set during World War II and is the story of Dwight D. Eisenhower, a world class general who later becomes President of the United States, and his relationship and subsequent affair with his driver, Kay Summersby, and the impact their relationship has on Mamie Eisenhower. The relationship grows as Ike faces challenge after challenge in defeating Hitler and Mamie waits at home listening to the vicious gossiping of “friends.” Cost: Free. Registration is required.
