The Eyes Have It: Implantable Telescope Technology
Guest Speaker: Stephen Lewis, OD, WK Eye Institute Thursday, April 5, 4 p.m. Franks Community Centre Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a gradual, progressive deterioration of the macula, the small area in the center of the retina. Damage to the macula affects the detailed vision, the vision used to read, see TV, drive and do detailed work. Macular degeneration is the leading cause of vision loss for people aged 60 and older. Stephen Lewis, OD, will discuss an innovative technology used to treat end-stage age-related macular degeneration. Implantable telescope technology is designed to improve the visual acuity by reducing the impact of the central “blind spot” caused by AMD. Cost: Free. Registration is required.

Guest Speaker: Don Hall, MD, retired ophthalmologist Tuesday, April 24, 3:30 p.m. Chapel at The Oaks Don Hall reviews John A. Farrell’s enthralling tour de force biography of the nation’s only president to resign in disgrace. This nonfiction account of Richard Nixon’s life, from a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy at the end of World War II to the Presidency in 1969, may well be the defining portrait of a man Farrell writes has come “so far, so fast, and so alone.” Cost: Free. Wednesday, April 18, 4 p.m. Chapel at The Oaks David Otto brings his expertise of world religions to The Oaks each month in an enlightening and entertaining hour. This month, Otto will explore Seventh-Day Adventism, a Protestant Christian denomination distinguished by its observance of Saturday, the seventh day of the week in Christian and Jewish calendars, as the Sabbath.
