I would like to respond to Mr. Avallone’s editorial on the Confederate monument at the courthouse. I believe the monument should be moved, but not because I think those who disagree with me want to “go back to the time of slavery.” I want to go forward to a time in which everyone, regardless of their race or status, has equal opportunity. I want go forward to a time when I can go to the courthouse without having to see a monument that honors a frankly treasonous rebellion against the United States, fought for the state’s right to legalize slavery.
