Mr. Avallone, I believe this is the best article (“Government Cannot Fix Everything,” March 1 edition, The Forum) that you have ever composed! Congratulations. It is one subject that has been of interest to me for some time. I ardently hope that this concludes the political life of (Chicago) Mayor Emanuel. I cannot think of another politician that I hold in such low regard. The situation in Chicago requires the help and witness of the entire country. If allowed to persist, it is like a cancer in the black community. Yes, I agree that the government must become involved, but with careful study of the entire situation, causes and effects, with the entire community being involved before anything is done. We must do some planning in advance, consider the objectives and then act with the entire approval and participation of the Chicago Police Department. We must remember that when the government concludes its activities, it must be contained and continue with local participation. Too often government intervention is too abrupt, and the only consideration seems to be cost! Lives, as you so eloquently point out, are at stake and are to be given number one priority. Thanks for your very inspiring article. Hoping to see progress along those lines. – Maurice H. Lamothe See also
