Barksdale’s Saddest Losses

Guest Speaker: John Andrew Prime, former Times military reporter, columnist and author Monday, Nov. 14, 3 p.m. Tower Ballroom John Andrew Prime will talk about historic and mysterious past losses among the crews who have trained or worked at Barksdale Air Force Base. One of these events will be remembered by Barksdale on its 50th anniversary Friday, Nov. 18. Prime will share the story of a B-52G that was performing a routine exercise when it crashed. Another – a C-124 flight leaving Barksdale with a crew of 50 men – had to ditch. All aboard exited safely and were found by a B-29 from England, but with no rescue equipment on board, the B-29 had to return to land. Nineteen hours later when a rescue craft reached the scene, there was no crew to be found. What happened to the Cullen Crew? Cost: $5, nonresidents. Registration is required.

Diabetes and Vision Loss Guest Speaker: Dr. David Bryan, ophthalmologist with WK Eye Institute  Friday, Nov. 18, 2:30 p.m. Franks Community Centre Dr. David Bryan, ophthalmologist at WK Eye Institute-Pierremont, will discuss how diabetes can cause eye problems and may lead to blindness. If not properly diagnosed and treated, diabetes can lead to complications within the retina and cause the small blood vessels in the eye to weaken and also leak. These leaks or hemorrhages can create irreversible damage to the retina and permanent vision loss – also known as diabetic retinopathy. Dr. Bryan will also discuss the different types of treatments that are available for patients who suffer with diabetes and diabetic retinopathy.

Gospel Concert with Miles Pike Guest Performer: Awardwinning recording artist Miles Pike  Wednesday, Nov. 30, 3 p.m. Franks Community Centre Making a return trip to The Oaks of Louisiana, awardwinning recording artist Miles Pike, along with wife Martha, will perform a concert of Southern Gospel music as November draws to a close. Pike, born legally blind, believes God has taken his disability and used him as “a son of encouragement,” crafting him to become a minister of the Gospel. He has been blessed with a fiveoctave range that allows him to sing the highest tenor and lowest base notes. As always, it promises to be an afternoon of wonderful entertainment, made more special by the piano accompaniment of Martha Pike.
