WK CANCER CENTER AWARDED ACCREDITATION
Willis-Knighton Cancer Center has been awarded a three-year term of
accreditation in radiation oncology following a review by the American
College of Radiology. Radiation oncology (radiation therapy) is the
careful use of highenergy radiation to treat cancer. A radiation
oncologist may use radiation to cure cancer or to relieve a cancer
patient’s pain.
Willis-Knighton
Cancer Center has committed to multiple accreditations to help assure
patients that they are receiving the highest standards of radiation
therapy care. In addition to this ACR accreditation, awarded by the
nation’s oldest and most widely accepted radiation oncology accrediting
body, the cancer center is also accredited by the American College of Radiation Oncology and is among a select group of cancer centers that maintains this dual accreditation.
The
center’s comprehensive accreditation is awarded by the American College
of Surgeons’ Commission on Cancer as a Community Hospital Community
Cancer Program.
The
ACR is a national professional organization serving more than 36,000
diagnostic/interventional radiologists, radiation oncologists, nuclear
medicine physicians and medical physicists with programs focusing on the
practice of medical imaging and radiation oncology and the delivery of
comprehensive health-care services.
LSU’S ORR AWARDED GRANT
The
National Institute of Health has awarded a $1.45 million grant to an
LSU Health Shreveport researcher whose work could help pave the way for
new drugs to prevent deadly heart attacks and strokes, Wayne Orr, Ph.D.,
associate professor of pathology, whose lab studies the process of
atherosclerosis. A cholesterol-driven chronic infl ammatory disease of
the arteries, atherosclerosis results in the formation of plaques which
block blood vessels and limit blood fl ow. When the plaques rupture,
they can produce blood clots, causing a heart attack or stroke.
Current
treatments for atherosclerosis target the circulating risk factors,
like elevated cholesterol, diabetes and high blood pressure, whereas no
treatments focus on the local infl ammation and remodeling of the vessel
wall that occur in atherosclerosis. By targeting these, Orr’s research
could be a catalyst for a new class of atherosclerosis drugs. This is
signifi cant since a large number of people cannot tolerate current
treatments.
Success of
the project could not only help with treating cardiovascular diseases,
but also with other infl ammatory diseases, Orr said.
