UnitedWayofNorthwestLouisianahostedDayof Caring,aone-day,community-widevolunteereventthat allowsUnitedWaydonorsandcompaniesanopportunity toseetheircontributionsatwork.Itconnectslocal businessandindustrywithnonprofitagenciesinneedof assistance.Morethan200volunteersfrommorethan20 areabusinessesandorganizationsparticipatedinhelping 24nonprofitagenciescompletevolunteerprojects. DayofCaringisthemostvisibleUnitedWayeffort. Projectsofferedvolunteersafirst-handopportunity tolearnabouthealthandhumanserviceneedsin NorthwestLouisiana.Worksiteprojectsincludedpainting, landscaping,clericalwork,sortingfoodandclothing,and deepcleaning. OneofLSUS’ownhaswrittenthreecollegelevel mathbookswithanotheroneontheway.Dr.Paul SissonstartedworkingatLSUSin1993andiscurrently thedeanofgraduatestudies,associatevicechancellor forsponsoredresearch,aswellasaprofessorof mathematics.Inadditiontotheseresponsibilities,Sisson decidedtostartwritinghisfirstmathbooktitled,“College Algebra,”in2001.Thebookwasreleasedin2003bythe HawkesLearningSystems/QuantSystems,Inc.located inCharleston,S.C.Shortlyafter,Sissonreleasedhis secondbook,“PreCalculus,”whilejustthreeyearslater heproducedhisthirdbooktitled,“CollegeAlgebra:A ConciseApproach.”Hisfirstthreetextbooksarecurrently beingusedat180campusesaroundthecountryincluding LSUS.SissonpreviouslyhadaconnectionwithHawkes LearningSystemsafterhavinghelpedthemwithafew softwareissuesinthepast.
