Comedy highlights man’s love for hobby

Shreveport Little Theatre has found a winning formula in staging comedies written by playwright Ken Ludwig over the years. The author’s newest effort, “The Fox on the Fairway,” opens Nov. 6 at the historic Margaret Place theater.

Michael Blake Powell, familiar to local audiences as an award-winning performer, moves behind the scenes to direct this comedy about man’s eternal love affair with golf.

Powell won’t be the only familiar name associated with this outing. Cast members include John Bogan, Nancy Dennis Campbell, Sloan Folmer, Anna Maria Sparke, Laura Beeman Nugent and Adam Philley.

Performances are scheduled for 8 p.m. Nov. 6, 7, 8, 13, 14, 15, 2 p.m. Nov. 9, 16 at SLT, 812 Margaret Place.

Individual tickets are $18 for seniors, students and active military and $20 for adults. Student Rush tickets are available at curtain time for $10 cash with student ID.

Tickets are available through SLT’s box office at 424-4439 or can be purchased online at www.shreveportlittletheatre.com. For further information, call or visit SLT’s box office at 812 Margaret Place, open weekdays from noon to 4 p.m.

Spooky Season

Historic Jefferson is getting into the spirit of the spooky season Oct. 29 when The Opera House Theatre Players brew up a fundraiser for the acting company. The Monster Karaoke and “Krazy Kostume Kontest” will be held from 6 to 10 p.m. at the DB Franchise Restaurant in downtown Jefferson.

Cash prizes will be awarded to the winner in three age categories judged by audience members. Admittance to the party is free but there is a fee required to enter the karaoke contest. The categories are ages 5 to 12, 12 to 21, and ages 21 and older. Fees to enter are $5, $10 and $15, and the winner in each category will receive a $50 cash prize. To be eligible to win the cash prize singers must wear a costume while singing. OHTP Director Marcia Thomas said consolation prizes will be awarded to those wishing to sing but wearing no costume.

Jefferson artists will exhibit some of their spookier art at the event and it will be available for purchase, according to Thomas. She said patrons will be greeted by a replica of Rod Serling as they step into the Twilight Zone of Macabre Art. Serling created and hosted the TV series “Twilight Zone” and “Night Gallery.” His writing credits include “Requiem for a Heavyweight,” and “Planet of the Apes.”

Patrons are invited to come to the restaurant for an evening meal at their own cost but entrance to the event in the party room at the rear of the restaurant will be free and light Halloween-styled refreshments will be offered at no extra cost. For information, call 903-665-2310.

Mudbug Entries

Downtown Shreveport Unlimited is looking for a design for the 2015 Mudbug Madness festival. The deadline for entries is 5 p.m. Nov. 15. Designs should include the crawfish symbol and meet several other criteria.

Designs submitted for consideration should incorporate “Mudbug Madness #32,” Downtown Shreveport Unlimited, festival dates and location, and be adaptable for color and black and white reproduction in a variety of media. The design can be submitted in a number of formats, but also must be matted for display. The design selected by the judges will be used on T-shirts, posters, cups and in print and electronic media.

Up to three designs may be submitted by each artist. Entries will be accepted until 5 p.m. Nov. 15 at the DSU offices at 401 Edwards St. in downtown Shreveport. The design contest winner will receive a cash prize of $500. For more information, contact Melanie Bacon at 226-5641.

Moving Art

There are only a couple of chances left for you to be the judge of a local art competition sponsored by the Bossier Arts Council and Landers Fiat.

The competition began Oct. 8 and runs through Nov. 11. Each week artists compete for a gift basket from Fine Line Art Supply in Ruston and weekly winners will compete for a grand prize of $1,000 cash.

BAC is hosting the event each Wednesday during the competition at Landers, located at 1330 E. Bert Kouns Industrial Loop. Audience members vote for their favorite piece of art while listening to music and sampling refreshments. All the art will be available for purchase, as well.
