May is filled with vibrant events

May is shaping up to be a busy month on the local art scene.

The Bossier Arts Council will open a couple of exhibits May 6. BAC’s Gallery Fine Art Center will present the art of Carola Nix. The show will run from May 6-July 26, with an opening reception 5 to 7 p.m. May 20. The gallery is located at 2151 Airline Dr., Suite 1200, Bossier City.

Running at the same time will be the art of Nicole Duet.

Born and raised in Germany, Nix studied interior design and architecture before coming to The United States. She is a member of the Colored Pencil Society of America, the Shreveport Art Club, Bossier Arts Council, the Creative Arts Connection of Bossier City and a roster member of the Northwest Louisiana Artist Directory of the Shreveport Arts Council. Nix has also published book covers as well as illustrations for the German-American author Patricia Koelle. She teaches workshops in colored pencil art and her work can be found listed under her maiden name, Corola Angrick.

Duet is an artist originally from New Orleans and is assistant professor of drawing and painting at the School of Art at Louisiana Tech University. Duet received her master’s of fine arts in drawing and painting from California State University Long Beach and was awarded the College of Liberal Arts Distinguished Achievement in creative activity. Her teaching credits include Otis College of Art and Design, California State University Northridge and ongoing summer classes for the animation union at the American Animation Institute in Los Angeles. Duet has exhibited paintings and drawings in museums and galleries on both coasts and nationwide. Her work is included in the public collections of California State University Long Beach and Los Angeles City College.

‘Venus in Fur’

The River City Repertory Theatre will stage May 8 “Venus in Fur,” a provocative comedy written by David Ives, which was nominated for the Tony Award for Best Play in 2012.

The sexy comedy was dubbed “90 minutes of good, kinky fun” by The New York Times, and it should be noted that this production is not for general audiences.

Patric McWilliams will direct the play, and a couple of familiar local actors will star. Logan Sledge and Charity Schubert will play Vanda and Thomas in the staging. The plot involves Vanda’s late arrival to an audition for a play based on a nineteenth century erotic novel. The director, Thomas, is not pleased about her late arrival, but her performance overcomes his reticence. It turns into a classic battle of the sexes with adult themes.

Performances run 7:30 p.m. May 8-10 at the BAC’s East Bank Theatre. The matinee begins at 3 p.m. May 11. Tickets are available online at www.brownpapertickets. com, or by calling the box office at 868-5888. For additional information, go to www.rivercityrep.org.

Stage Center Fundraiser

Stage Center announced it is bringing “The Oklahoma Song and Dance Company” to the area in partnership with the Weitzenhoffer School of Musical Theatre at the University of Oklahoma.

The event is being sponsored by Steve and Jackie Pugh as a fundraiser for Stage Center’s School of Performing Arts. Former Weitzenhoffer student Madison Pugh will perform with the troupe in a return to her hometown. Stage Center’s artistic director Jared Watson also received his bachelor’s degree in fine arts from the Weitzenhoffer School in 2004.

“The Oklahoma Song & Dance Company” with musical direction by Paul Christman, and tap choreography by Lyn Cramer is a 12-person, undergraduate musical theater, song and dance ensemble featuring vocals by Hugh Martin (“Meet Me in St. Louis”) and dances from the swing era. The performance will be at 2 p.m May 4 at Centenary College’s Marjorie Lyons Playhouse. Tickets will be available at the door only and are $10 for adults and $5 for children and students.
