The Women’s Philanthropy Network of The Community Foundation will meet April 3, to hear from the two finalists of its competitive grant process: Mary Harris, principal of South Highlands Magnet Elementary School, and Meshel Frasier, Instructional Coordinator of Fairfield Elementary Magnet School. The meeting will take place from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Community Central 401 Edwards Street, Suite 125.

The two principals will describe the pilot programs for which they are seeking funding from the Women’s Philanthropy Network. Members will vote on which grant to support when they meet again in May. More than $64,000 is available for the grant.

The South Highlands proposal seeks funding to transform schools through arts/science integration, immersion and collaboration with Arthur Circle Elementary. The grant would provide continuing professional development and supplies for South Highlands who is already implementing the integration. In turn, South Highlands will collaborate with Arthur Circle and provide initial professional development, training and supplies needed for Arthur Circle to initiate whole-school transformation through arts/ science integration and immersion.

The Fairfield elementary proposal seeks funding to begin a pilot program “Involved Parents Applying Developmental Skills (iPADS)” with Hersey Wilson Head Start. Fairfield’s administration and kindergarten will present developmentally appropriate activities to parents of Hersey Wilson Head Start. Parents can then take the activities home that will directly benefit their pre-schoolers. The workshops will include an introduction to the use of iPads and appropriate iPad apps for pre-school aged children. Parents will then be allowed to check out the iPads and use with their children at home.
