Aesclepius Party: Krewe of Aesclepius members dressed in costumes and brought canned goods for the Rescue Mission to their annual Halloween costume party Oct. 18. Members and their guests dined on Krewe President Debra Thomas’ famous andouille sausage and chicken gumbo among other assorted hot and cold appetizers and beverages.




Byrd Alumni: New inductees were admitted to the Byrd Alumni Hall of Fame at a luncheon Oct. 18 at East Ridge Country Club. Founded in 1987, it has 144 members. The Douglas Rountree family served as selection chairmen. Inductees were Victor Joris, Zoe Ramsey, Charles Allen, Aven “Tex” Williamson, Justice Jeff Victory, Ivan Smith Jr., Dr. Eugene Hunt III, Elliott Stonecipher, Alan Carter and Dr. Tom Watson.




Byrd Reunion: The Byrd High School class of 1953 held its 50-year reunion Oct. 19 at the home of Conway and Barbara Harris in Caspiana. Purple and gold balloons welcomed those coming down the highway. A life-sized yellow jacket was at the entrance of the interior of the home. Deceased members were acknowledged on a quilt.



Golf Association: The
Shreveport Ebony Golfer’s Association held a Scholarship Benefi t
Dinner on Oct. 27 at the Consortium. The association promotes education
and provide scholarships. The association’s membership drive was also
held to promote the game of golf and to get more female golfers and
volunteers involved. The late Orlando Chapman was the 2013 Shreveport
Ebony’s Golfer’s Association President. Orlando’s son Damien Lewis
Chapman attended the event in honor of his late father. Dinner was
provided by Brother’s Seafood.


Byrd Band: C.E.

at Northwestern State University. More than 25 bands competed and the
“Heartbeat” received all 1’s in their class, including Best Drum Major,
Best Percussion and Most Spirited Band Boosters.

Haven House: Community
Renewal’s Haven House held a rally Nov. 2 at Kings Highway Christian
Church. The rally brought together Haven House leaders from across
Shreveport and Bossier City for a time of inspiration and fellowship.
Haven House leaders are residents who volunteer to connect their
neighbors and help build a sense of community where they live. This
year’s guest speaker was David Rowe, president at Centenary College.



Mission Marketplace: The
sixth annual Mission Marketplace, which sells items from underdeveloped
countries, was held Nov. 9 by six churches at the St. Joseph’s Catholic
Church Family Life Center. The event helps artisans earn a living wage.
Items for sale included natural silk scarves from Madagascar,
chocolate, T-shirt purses, artwork, paper bracelets and cookbooks.
