Dr. R. Shane Barton, a fellowship trained orthopedic surgeon with The Orthopedic Clinic in Shreveport, has been elected to join the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons, an organization of orthopedic surgeons throughout the world who specialize in shoulder and elbow surgery. This is a high honor for Barton who becomes only the third doctor in Louisiana to be listed in the group’s membership. The American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons was created to enhance the study of shoulder and elbow surgery and to foster advances in the field, serving as an educational body responsible for scientific programs and advances. Membership in American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons, which has only 423 members, is by invitation only. Nominees to membership must be sponsored by two active members of the organization. Barton, in his ninth year of practice in Shreveport, is part of the Willis-Knighton Physician Network. A native of Henderson, Tex., Barton is a Presidential Endowed Scholar graduate of Texas A&M University and worked for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration in Houston before entering medical school at Baylor College of Medicine. As an honor graduate of Baylor, he served both an internship and residency there before receiving a shoulder, elbow and sports medicine fellowship at Harvard Medical School. While studying there he taught as a graduate clinical instructor and served as a team physician for the New England Patriots and Boston Red Sox. He has lived in Shreveport since 2005.
