Engagement Party: An engagement announcement party for Karen Eason and Brad Peace was held Aug. 10. The party was hosted by the bride’s aunt, Susan Smitherman, and her cousins Matthew and Kathryn Smitherman, Russell and Elizabeth Dean, Stephen Smitherman, Spencer Smitherman and Collyn Smitherman. Eason is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Eason of Shreveport, and Peace is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Phillip Peace of Natchitoches. The couple will marry Dec. 21 at First United Methodist Church in Shreveport.
Surprise Party: Jennifer Culverhouse was honored at a surprise birthday party Aug. 13. The party was held at East Ridge Country Club.
Crichton Dinner: A fundraiser event for Judge Scott Crichton, who is running for Louisiana Supreme Court Judge, was held Aug. 26 at 2Johns Restaurant. The event was well-attended and supported.
Byrd Game: C.E. Byrd Drum Line band mom Lynn Tibbitt and C.E. Byrd Drum Major band mom Kim Walker attended the Byrd vs. Zachary football game held Sept. 6 at Lee Hedges. The Byrd Yellow Jackets beat the Zachary Bronco’s 58-21.







Benevolence: The Backside Benevolence Fund held its annual fundraiser, the Super Derby Chaplains Awards Banquet, Sept. 11 at the Horseshoe Riverdome. This year, the event included recognition of those associated with horse racing and the local police and fi re departments from Shreveport and Bossier City. Attendees had an opportunity to personally meet the horse-racing celebrities of Louisiana Downs Race Track – jockeys, trainers, grooms and exercise-riders. The BBF provides in-kind assistance and benevolence in many ways such as spiritual, medical and social. Awards include honor Person of the Year, Thoroughbred Owner of the Year, Trainer of the Year, Jockey of the Year, Assistant Trainer/Exercise Person of the Year, Offi ce/Media Person of the Year, Quarter Horse Trainer of the Year and Jockey of the Year.
Wilson Concert: The “Redneck Woman” Gretchen Wilson performed Sept. 14 at DiamondJacks Casino, but not before a meet and greet for special guests. She posed for pictures and signed autographs. She has been performing for nine years.
Music Association: Greater Shreveport Music Association kicked off its 51st season with a luncheon Sept. 14 hosted by Pam Marr (Stonebridge, Bossier City). GSMTA is affi liated with Louisiana Music Teachers Association (LMTA) and Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) and exists to unite teachers of music in the Shreveport/Bossier City area to mutually promote their interests, facilitate collaboration, further pedagogical education and inspire higher levels of musical development and performance in the community. Oktoberfest: Shreveport Oktoberfest 2013 was held at Zocolo Neighborhood Eatery and Drinkery Sept. 28. Events included a Down Home Meats Masskrugstemmen Competition, the TapSnap Bier Girls photo kiosk and German music by Prost! Band from New Orleans. More than a dozen authentic German and German-style brews were featured in the Biergarten, and brats, pretzels, spatzle and more were devoured. Many attendees donned dirndls and lederhosen.
