Most people don’t think of their closets as anywhere they’d like to spend time, but when designer Catherine Smith wanted to create a relaxing, beautiful sanctuary for a client, she called Melanie Johnson of Closets by Melanie. Smith wanted something for her client that made her feel wonderful – a pretty environment. Johnson’s crew went the extra mile to build just that.

Thinking beyond wire shelves, Johnson’s company built white wooden cabinetry the scale of the room and made the closet a place the owner would want to show her friends.

“A place for everything, and everything in its place” holds true with the custom drawers divided into separate cubbies for things like lingerie and jewelry. Earrings and bracelets nest in a drawer, while necklaces have their own neatly arranged moveable hooks in another part of the closet. Individual shelves hold pairs of shoes, and each “box” is backed with a mirror, specially cut for the project by Farley’s Glass. They also did the inserts on some of the cabinetry and the glass for the door. The drawer pulls gleam like jewelry themselves, sourced from one of Johnson’s regular vendors.

One of the most functional additions to the closet is a “wardrobe lift.” It is a cantilevered hanging rack made so that it may be moved down to be easily reached with the pull of a lever. Although she meets with other professionals in her field yearly to confer about what is new and trendy, she finds her ways are often different. Taking advantage of high spaces is one of Johnson’s trademarks.

Utilizing spaces to their fullest potential, whether they be closets, pantries, garages or more, is what Closets by Melanie does best. Whether it be merely practical, or a closet turned into a lush oasis Melanie has the magic touch.
