Amanda Haynie, owner of Milling Around, has her finger on the pulse of what’s in in home fabrics. Autumn 2013 sees some good news for the collector in each of us, as eclectic design is at the forefront. The Miami Herald reported, “The era of specific decor trends is on the wane. Rooms full of traditional or modern furniture have been replaced by a more eclectic sensibility,” and Haynie agrees.

Mixing and matching has become an art unto itself. Pairing mid-century sofas with geometric accent pillows on a vintage rug with modern lighting is OK for the rest of the year. Mixing eras, fabrics and textures may bring out more in a room than you’ve ever seen before.

In types of fabric, the tactile is taking high priority. Sumptuous cotton velvets are back in for upholstery usage, and linen is much sought after. “Linen is the new silk,” Haynie said. “We can hardly keep enough of it in.”

As colors go, the soothing “spa” colors – watery blues and teals, tone-on-tone light naturals and soft shades of colors – are the trend with one exception. Orange is in. According to psychologists who study color, orange is the color of adventure and social communication. It is optimistic, sociable and extroverted, just in time for home gatherings.

Patterns are moving toward a celebration of geometry. Ikat is still popular, as are stripes and most predominantly, the Greek Key – a pattern of interlocking right-angled spirals. Not only are shoppers seeking it in fabrics but in the trim as well. Moroccan patterns, which rely heavily on geometry, are available, not only in fabric but extend to the rest of the home in stencils and tiles.

“Fussy trims like beads and tassels are out, and at trims and braids, again with the Greek Key motif, are up in sales by about 60 percent,” Haynie said. They add a more tailored look and are being used from draperies to furnishings.

Eclecticism is in, and with a dash of orange here, a Moroccan motif there with some tactile fabrics involved, your home can have a fashionable fall.
