Speakers share passion at event hosted by Ameriprise Financial

Among a crowd of about 100, Jan Moran, a retiree and volunteer for CHRISTUS Schumpert, sat with a group of friends during the Passion with a Purpose women’s retreat.

“I used to just let my husband take care of anything that dealt with finances,” Moran said. “But now I am learning that I need to learn this, too.”

The women’s retreat, hosted by Kevin Murphy with Ameriprise Financial was held July 25 at the Hilton Garden Inn in Bossier City. The retreat covers a variety of topics that center around women – from setting financial goals to getting quality automotive care.

This was the first women’s retreat but Murphy plans to continue this each year.

“Some of the people in this room are clients and friends,” Murphy said. “I work with a lot of women and widows that have more financial needs. I thought this event, which included topics about women’s health, social security, crafts and even women’s treatment in the automotive industry, would be a good way to provide them information on topics of interest” Murphy said.

Among the speakers were: Eric Simonian of Invesco, Dr. Kelly Carlisle of CHRISTUS Schumpert, Kathleen Williams of Kat’s Automotive, Grant Meyers of BlackRock, Dawn Coker of Shelby Lane’s Closet and Dennis Austin of Church at Red River.

Carlisle spoke to the crowd about her passion for women’s health. She referenced different food pyramids during the speech to give example of how to make nutritional decisions.

“We have a prescription for wellness on our plates not just in our pharmacies,” Carlisle said.

Members in the audience asked questions to speakers and also had the chance to speak to them personally.

Moran, a client of Murphy, said she likes that he has events like this to have his clients and others meet and share stories.

“[Murphy] promotes fellowship among his clients. He wants his clients to interact and get to know one another, and I really like that,” Moran said.

Putting clients in a safe environment so they can communicate on a variety of subjects is what these types of retreats are for.

“When you work with their family and financial future, you become personally involved. My clients are a part of my extended family. I care about them and want to put their minds at ease about their financial future,” Murphy said. Retreats and other avenues are tools used today to foster these kinds of relationships.
