Earlier this month, I had an interview with a local TV station about CityLife. I can count on one hand how many times in my life I have been personally interviewed, and I don’t mind keeping it that way. I went into print journalism for a reason. Like most of us do, I tend to freeze up when I see a huge camera in my face.

Living Large
Mick had come to the hospital to see me and welcome his newest great-grandchild, Grady, who was born the morning of Aug. 18. With much of the hospital parking lot under construction, it had been an ordeal for my grandparents, both in their 80s, to navigate the hospital’s winding path to the labor and delivery unit.

The Scientific Method
“Isaac Newton wasn’t the first person to see an apple fall; he was simply the first to ask “why?” Brown and other Sci-Port staff will host a science fair bootcamp Oct. 11- 12 highlighting the scientific method. Parents and students will want to be there to learn the “Method to the Madness” of a winning science fair project.

Prepping for pumpkinpalooza
I prefer to wear jeans, boots and a sweater to shorts and a tank top. I love the cooler weather and the opportunity to snuggle under a blanket. Soup and cider and Geaux Tigers! I would say I love the changing leaves, but I have long since learned that in Louisiana the leaves just mostly turn brown and crunch to the ground.

Being involved makes a difference
It is during this time that an adolescent transitions from childhood, being highly dependent and controlled, into a period of developing their self-exploration and independence. Adolescence is a time for change for the adolescent and a time for change for the family unit, while still needing parents to maintain the right amount of parental support.

Tidying Up
To those who know me well, it is no surprise that I’m a tidy and organized person. To those who may not know me as well, one step into my home and you could easily figure out that I like to keep things in order.

Steaks and Symphony
There is something truly magical about seeing a movie at the theater, but it’s an activity that’s often replaced by snuggling up on the couch with Netflix or an on-demand movie. Actually sitting in a theater seat with a big screen is something that Chris and I cherish and is our No.

The Starlet on Stage
Michigan native Sarah Bauer cannot remember a time when she wasn’t singing. Bauer is a Shreveport Opera artist in-residence and loves being in the spotlight. Audiences can look forward to seeing Bauer in a variety of roles for the 66th season of the Shreveport Opera.

How to support a loved one who’s fighting cancer
Schwartzberg was a 31-year-old newlywed when she was first diagnosed with breast cancer. She underwent treatment and eventually was declared cancer free. She moved on with her life, giving birth to two children and launching a technology company. Then, when she was 42, the cancer returned.

Making Strides
The MSABC is the largest network of breast cancer awareness events in the nation, uniting more than 300 communities to finish the fight.

It’s always a pleasant surprise when an unheralded candidate suddenly appears on the local political scene and qualifies for office. Such is the case with the recent announcement by Trina Chu that she will run for the Caddo District Judge; she qualified this week.

DINING
My favorite time of year has arrived: fall. When you walk into the house from the outside cool air, and you feel the sudden change of air temperature against your face, accompanied by the wafting smell of warmth from a hearty stew that has been simmering for hours, to me there is nothing better.

Justinian Royalty
King Lyn Lawrence and Queen Denise Landry were crowned as the new royalty of Justinian XXI at DiamondJacks on Aug. 15. Guests entered from through a walkway of lighted show posters – “A Chorus Line,” “Rock of Ages,” “Grease” and “Wicked” – at the black-tie event that had a Broadway theme.

James Burton Festival
James Burton celebrated his 75th birthday and kicked off the James Burton International Festival on Aug. 22-24. The three-day festival began with a birthday celebration for Burton. Tracy Atkins, Paul Shaffer, Ann Wilson, Mike Wolfe and Priscilla Presley were just a few of the stars who were on stage for the event.

A sense of family
This took place back before you really heard much about missing children. Walsh has been to all 50 state Legislatures. I have already used him as an example in a talk that I gave about my job as a legislative assistant and how one person can make a difference.
