My best friend had a facelift about five months ago, and she looks amazing.

She always had quiet confidence, but this new look is making her really stand out. She is making a lot of new friends in Shreveport-Bossier City – possibly because of her new look.

As her friend, I am drawn to her style, attitude and depth. She is quick to introduce me to new faces and isn’t afraid to share the spotlight with this city’s starlets.

Think of your best friend as a magazine. And hopefully this magazine.

Each month, there’s an underlining theme to some of the stories within each issue. This issue will be out on stands for two months, and, with that in mind, I thought about the substance. Two-month combos are usually the most challenging because of the longevity on stands.

In this issue, we focus on “DIY,” but it goes beyond the do-it-yourself crafts we get from Pinterest or Martha Stewart. These stories take the term quite literally to hopefully inspire and empower you to do more than what is expected and to take on what some might think is unattainable.

Just like a best friend, these articles are telling and share the message, “You can do it. She did it, so I know that you can.” Danielle Richard is one of those women who is making things happen. It was an easy fit to contact her for a DIY story. I admire her for being a young female entrepreneur and putting herself out in the community.

As a participant in the Pop Up Project, awarded by the city of Shreveport located in the Red River district, Richard was able to set up her store front and take advantage of the rent-free location making her business visible to local customers.

She loves what she does and it shows in her interaction with her clients. There is no part of the business that she isn’t involved in. Read Page 31.

And there’s Lena Parker. How could you not want to take a look inside Parker’s greenhouse filled with orchids? Early in the spring, she called to let me know her orchids were blooming and it would be a great photo opportunity.

In speaking with a reporter, it was obvious that there was more to her story, and that she wasn’t weary of such a finicky flower. Read Page 34.

So in the summer months when most of us plan getaways or vacations be sure to bring along your best friend. But be gentle, she just had a facelift.
