A mother’s knee

As far back as I can remember, my mother has taught me about life and the right way to live it. She is 91 years old now, and the learning continues. Really, the things my mother has taught me are not complicated but simple and true. These things give life meaning and purpose. I, like you, have learned much from my mother.

Come and reminisce with me as I think on those things that have been instilled in me through my mother:

Take turns and share.
Tell the truth and be honest.
Forgive others always.
Don’t waste anything.
Be generous and giving.
Always do things the right way.
If you mess up, start over and make things right.
Always go to Sunday school and church.
Don’t burp or pass gas in public.
Be neighborly.
Remember to brush your teeth and wash your ears.
Eat your vegetables and fruits.
Be kind to everyone.
Play and laugh some.
Be on time.
Love everybody like you love yourself.
Stay humble.
Clean up before company comes.
Leave the world a better place than when you entered it.
Do what your mother tells you because she is “The Mother.”
A mother can threaten to run away into the woods but never does.
Always help with the chores around the house.
Always come home on time.
Be a role model and develop character.
Make a difference in other people’s lives.
Take time for the little things.
Develop deep spiritual roots – pray.
Love God with all your heart, your soul and your mind.

There are different kinds of mothers in this world. There are professional, simple, strict, soft, conservative, modern and cool moms. Whatever type of mom you have or had, she will always hold a place of great importance in your life; she really is a celebrity of sorts in the eyes of her children.

Mothers are everything to us when we are small; our lives revolve around her.

She has been there to protect us, hold us and to kiss away our hurts. She was there when we were sick at night. She stayed up late and got up early to help us with school projects, school parties or to make a special occasion dress. Mothers endure our tantrums, stubbornness and struggles. There is simply no way we can repay or thank our mothers for all they have done for us but with the exception that we can be a good role model for our own children.

Many times, we do not appreciate all our mothers have done for us until we become parents ourselves. Remember, she has given you the best years of her life, so treat her with respect and appreciation for all she has done for you. Any month is the perfect time to celebrate mom. Do something special for her throughout the year.

Take time to thank your mother for all the years she has spent and is still spending to take time for you. Give her the love in return that she so richly deserves. She is the first and foremost most influential person you will ever have in your life.

If you are a new or young mom, remember you are always teaching, and your influence will go on forever – into eternity.

I want to say to my mother, “I love you and appreciate you, Mother, for all you have done for me through all these years.”
