[ FROM THE EDITOR ]

Santa Bob and Mrs. Beth Claus brought cookies the first time we met. That was the beginning of a beautiful friendship. The meeting was for their 98 days ’til Christmas campaign, along with the Shreveport-Bossier Convention & Tourism Bureau to promote the “Holly Jolly Handbook.” I quickly explained to Santa, “I am a big fan of your work,” just like I met a celebrity.

The second time I met the “magic” couple (as they are often referred as) was during a photo shoot. It’s hard to have a bad day when you walk through a door at Bass Pro Shops in Bossier City and Santa Bob greets you with, “Well hello, Lydia! I’m so happy to see you!” That must mean I am on the “nice” list. With that warm welcome, Mrs. Beth Claus offered me a sweet smile and a hello. She waves like a beauty queen. (See Page 28.) Santa Bob and Mrs. Beth took us on a tour of Bass Pro Shops to give us a feel for their work family. We got a behind-the-curtain look at the makings of “Santaland,” which is Bass Pro’s place for Santa Bob and Mrs. Beth to take their signature pictures with children or adults. This “land” is complete with Comet, the talking reindeer.

Walking along with Santa Bob and Mrs. Beth through the store was special. Santa Bob would stop for every child to wave, then go up to them and take a picture at the parent’s request. Mrs. Beth took over the tour at that time. She shared with me the time when the computer was delayed and families were getting frustrated. She said Santa Bob played a little beat, and she danced for the children in the middle of Santaland.

As we continued through the shop, Mrs. Beth stopped near each department, waving and saying hello to co-workers as they admired her festive red velvet outfit. It must be that twinkle in her eyes that encourage people to smile and be nice. Santa and Mrs. Claus are always watching.
