Saugat Mali, owner, Sugar’s Hot Pizza. In Boston’s Seaport neighborhood, the land of glass skyscrapers and $25 cocktails, the newly opened Sugar’s Hot Pizza aims to be a casual pie shop and a rare affordable option. Their tagline is “Nothin’ fancy.”
This concept comes from the team behind Stubbys, a Nantucket-based sandwich shop that expanded to the Seaport in 2023.
The menu at Sugar’s includes New York-style pizza by the pie and the slice as well as deli-style sandwiches and classic desserts like brownie sundaes and oversize chocolate chip cookies. Go basic with a cheese, pepperoni or veggie pizza or try something that packs a stronger flavor punch like the Hot Stuff topped with hot honey, capicola, jalapeños and red onions.
Expect a rotating selection of slice-of-the-day specials including a jerk slice inspired by the Stubbys Jamaican jerk chicken sandwich.
Slices are $5.95, pies are $29.95 and subs are $16.45. That’s pricier than most pizza shops, but a steal in the Seaport.
“Sugar’s is about keeping it simple,” said owner Saugat Mali. “We’ve spent the last few years getting to know the Seaport community through Stubbys, and one thing we heard again and again was that people wanted a true slice shop. This is our take on that, a place where you can walk in, grab a big slice and know exactly what you’re getting every time.”
The name is a bit of an inside joke. Saugat’s name was perpetually autocorrected to “Sugar” in text chains and that ultimately became the owner’s nickname.
The shop interior features a classic white and green subway tile counter displaying some of the available pizzas. A community Polaroid wall gives it that lived-in feel although the building and the neighborhood are new by Boston standards. There are 20 seats inside, including a few red counter stools, but takeout is a major part of the business.
During nice weather, diners can grab a pizza to go and eat it overlooking the harbor and the Boston skyline at the public seating in Fan Pier Park.
The shop is open until 11 p.m. daily and special weekend hours will help cater to a burgeoning nightlife.
“Sugar’s brings something essential to Seaport,” said Ariel Foxman, area vice president of Brand and Experience for Boston Seaport by WS Development. “Great pizza places have a way of becoming part of the daily rhythm of a neighborhood, somewhere people return to again and again. Sugar’s adds that kind of energy here with something approachable, consistent and built for everyday.”
