Julius Edwards

Eastern Maine Community College (EMCC) is poised to enter a dynamic new era this spring as the Maine Community College System Board of Trustees officially announces the appointment of Dr. Julius Edwards as the college’s next president. Dr. Edwards will formally assume his leadership role on April 1, bringing a sophisticated blend of academic rigor and operational expertise to the Bangor-based campus.

The selection comes after an exhaustive national search aimed at finding a leader capable of balancing EMCC’s commitment to academic excellence with the rapidly evolving needs of the regional workforce. Dr. Edwards arrives in Maine from Ivy Tech Community College in Indiana, one of the most expansive and influential community college systems in the United States. During his tenure at Ivy Tech, which serves over 168,000 students across 19 campuses, he held several senior leadership roles, most recently serving as the Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs.

With a career spanning more than 15 years, Dr. Edwards has developed a reputation as a champion for “workforce-aligned” education. His extensive portfolio includes the oversight of high-impact programs in fields critical to the modern economy, such as advanced automation and robotics, supply chain management, agriculture, and commercial driving. His vision for community colleges is rooted in the belief that education should serve as a direct bridge to economic mobility, a philosophy that mirrors EMCC’s core mission of providing accessible, high-quality technical and career training.

Beyond his administrative success, Dr. Edwards brings a personal commitment to the classroom, having served as an adjunct faculty member teaching business courses. His academic credentials are equally robust: he holds a Doctorate in Higher Education Leadership from Indiana State University, a Master of Business

Administration from Indiana Wesleyan University, and a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting and Finance from Indiana University – Purdue University Indianapolis.

This transition marks a bittersweet milestone for the EMCC community. Dr. Edwards succeeds the late Elizabeth Russell, a deeply respected leader who passed away last fall shortly after her retirement. Since then, the college has been led by Janet Sortor, Chief Academic Affairs Officer for the Maine Community College System, who has served as interim president. As Dr. Edwards takes the helm, he inherits a legacy of dedicated service and a college community ready to tackle the challenges of a 21st-century labor market.
