A man with a lengthy criminal record has sued the Village of Riverton and two cops who resigned after video surfaced in February that captured former officer Grant Peterson headbutting a DUI suspect at the police station while former officer Tricia Summerson, who was in the same room, did nothing. Prosecutors in February charged Peterson with two counts of aggravated battery and one count of official misconduct while dropping charges against the suspected drunken driver. Last month, Steven Behl sued the village, Peterson and Summerson, claiming in his federal lawsuit that the officers had wrongly beaten and tased him after awakening him in the front seat of a pickup truck, where he’d been sleeping. In their report, Peterson and Summerson wrote that Behl woke up swinging at Peterson and tried to grab the officer’s holstered gun. Behl was taken by ambulance to Memorial Medical Center, then booked into the Sangamon County jail. Prosecutors in March dismissed charges of aggravated assault and disarming a police officer. Behl has a criminal history dating to 2007 that includes convictions for unlawful use of a credit card, possession of a controlled substance, disorderly conduct, aggravated battery, property damage, resisting a police officer, obstructing a police officer and violation of a protection order.
