Not even the coronavirus can kill a campaign. The race for the 13th congressional district is on. Betsy Dirksen Londrigan, a Democrat from Springfield, is sparring with incumbent Rep. Rodney Davis, a Republican from Taylorville. Londrigan celebrated her March 17 primary win by releasing herself from “self-quarantine.” She had been in contact with someone infected at the Women’s March in Springfield. That night she reported she was symptomfree. And she beat the other Democratic nominee by a wide margin. Wasting no time, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee immediately sent out a release that described Davis as a “true creature of the swamp.” The seat in Congress is hotly contested. And the race has been messy at times, such as an infiltrated meeting and an altercation at a fundraiser. Davis won by less than a single percentage point in 2018. In late February, his camp sent out a release that said Londrigan is “surrounded by corruption” and has ties to former governor Rod Blagojevich. Both candidates promise health care is a top priority. It’s an already popular platform that is ever more visible. The pandemic will pose practical challenges to their campaigns. There are sure to be fewer doors knocked, for one. But whether this time around goes more or less negative, and whether coronavirus could take credit for that, remains to be seen.
