The Illinois State Museum’s collector’s day and artifact identification event will focus on anthropological artifacts, rocks, minerals, fossils and bones. Museum visitors are invited to bring items to be identified by staff members and other experts. Those who bring photos of objects or specimens are encouraged to include a ruler or coin in the photo for a size comparison. The participating experts will do their best to correctly identify objects, however no guarantees are made and, due to time constraints, only one object per person may be identified. Objects brought for identification will not be appraised and no buying, selling or trading is allowed at the event. Collectors will also be at the event with displays of their meteorites, fishing reels, historic photographs and wood carvings. They will speak to visitors about the stories of each collection. illinoistatemuseum.org.
