Doing things is hard. If it wasn’t, we would have a homeless shelter and a functional mental-health care system. There would be free parking downtown and a law school on the Y (excuse us, North Mansion) block.

Prairie Archives hasn’t been in Springfield forever, it just seems like it, and every town should be so lucky. Smells of paper and aging carpet help feed a sense of familiarity and purpose perfect for its downtown venue, where an alleged quartermillion volumes, give or take, wait for new owners.

These guys might claim Louisville, Kentucky, as home base, but Nick, the singer and songwriter who started the group, grew up in Jeffersonville, Indiana, on the Ohio River in a family working on five generations of living in the area.

NATURE | Autumn colors included
Take a stroll through Oak Ridge Cemetery during the sixth annual Tree Tour on Oct. 26. Learn about 19 majestic trees, some dating from 1862, others only 10-15 years old, including unique specimens grafted by Guy Sternberg. The oldest Osage orange tree in Springfield is the star tree and other specimens include ash, maple, oak and sycamore.
