Alateen is a peer support group for teenagers who are struggling with the effects of someone else’s problem drinking or drug use. At Alateen meetings, teenagers meet to share their experiences and help find solutions to problems, learn effective ways to cope with difficult circumstances and to encourage one another. Al-Anon is a mutual support program for adults whose lives have been affected by someone else’s drinking or substance abuse. By sharing common experiences and applying the Al-Anon principles, families and friends of alcoholics can bring positive changes to their individual situations, whether or not the alcoholic admits the existence of a drinking problem or seeks help. Neither group is affiliated with a religion, even if the meetings are held in a church or religious center. Religious beliefs are not a subject for discussion at the meetings, which focus solely on coping with the effects of someone’s drinking. Al-Anon is selfsupporting, accepting contributions only from Al-Anon members and declining others’ contributions to keep the group free of outside influences that might prove to be diversions from its primary purpose. Alateen is free. The two groups meet at the same location and at the same time, but in separate rooms.
