On Friday, Aug. 11, celebrate the opening of three new exhibitions at the DEMO Project, a modern art gallery directed by Springfield-based contemporary artists. The first exhibition, titled “Dominus,” is a solo project by Maria Lux, a research-driven installation artist out of Walla Walla, Washington, whose exhibition utilizes raccoons and Roombas to examine animal and machine resistance against human forces to domesticate and dominate. The second exhibition is “Exchange Between,” a two-person show between Los Angeles-based Katie Kirk, whose backgrounds include film and television production as well as painting and drawing, and Chicago-based painter Kaveri Raina. “Exchange Between” encourages viewers to consider the role of pleasure in both art and life. Also on display will be “STNDRD,” a curatorial project by St. Louis-based Sage Dawson, which features a flagpole mounted to the DEMO Project’s façade coupled with an exhibition space and presentation of “Failed Flag” by Garry Noland. All three exhibitions will be on display during Friday’s opening reception, as well Saturday afternoons from 1-4 p.m. through Saturday, Sept. 2, or by appointment.
