FRED J. SCHRAEDER

Dec. 26, 1923 – Sept. 28, 2016

Dad made a difference in countless lives and he inspired me. He was born the youngest of 10 children. His mother died soon after his birth and he was raised by his father and siblings. Moms seem to exhibit the ultimate level of service by raising their children. Even without his mom to lead the way, he and his nine siblings all knew how to serve others. He and three of his brothers served in WWII, one losing his life in Europe. His service to America continued throughout his entire adult life, from the state legislature, the American Red Cross, Peoria’s Methodist Hospital and the Old State Capitol in Springfield. He did these things because he loved people and service was natural for him.

Life for me and many others is privileged due to the actions of my dad. While I never had to leave my family to protect the rights of others, I’ve come to understand that the work my dad did throughout his life was critical to the life we live.

Dad took me on many of his journeys, either personally or through the stories he told. He could sure tell stories. I worked with dad at his restaurant, campaigned with him, enjoyed visiting with him in the Illinois House of Representative chambers, and served as his guardian on an Honor Flight to Washington, D.C., in 2012. I treasure that trip today.

The word “hero” is thrown loosely around a lot these days. Dad exhibited what a true hero was every day of his life. He spent the last several years caring for his wife of 70 years, Helen. He was an example of all we can be in life. I am honored to have had Fred Schraeder as my father.

Rest in peace, dad. Love you always.

–Kevin Schraeder, son
