FAIRS & FESTIVALS | Migration celebration

This Saturday join The Log Cabin Birders and Lincoln Land Association of Bird Banders at Lincoln’s New Salem State Historic Site for a celebration of some of the world’s smallest birds. Averaging just 3-5 inches in length, hummingbirds have the highest metabolism of any homoeothermic creature, a necessity to support the rapid beating of their wings (up to 50 flaps per second), which enables flying speeds of up to 34 miles per hour. During flight, hummingbirds consume up to 10 times more oxygen per gram of muscle tissue than elite human athletes. During this annual festival, volunteers will band and release hummingbirds while discussing bird migration patterns. Attendees will also have the opportunity to “adopt” the banded birds.
