BULLETIN BOARD | A celebration of amateur radio

Join the Sangamon Valley Radio Club, Springfield Community MakerSpace, former WAND-TV chief meteorologist Lee Davis and other technological experts for a Field Day and Family Day celebration to cap off 2016’s Amateur Radio Week on Saturday, June 24, from 11 a.m. through 3 p.m. at Riverton Middle School. The free event includes displays, mini-courses and workshops along with a 24-hour ham radio communications exercise and competition taking place throughout the United States and Canada. Weather forecasting classes led by Lee Davis begin at 11 a.m., where children will learn about weather patterns and experience life as a television weatherperson using green screen technology. Sangamon Valley Radio Club members that are not participating in the 24-hour competition will run workshops on Morse Code and other communications-related technology. Attendees can also peruse displays by the National Weather Service, the American Red Cross and Ameren, and, with the aid of a licensed ham radio operator, go live on the air in the GOTA communications van.
