The Jerome Police Department has one less place to catch traffic scoffl aws since Michael Lopez, president of the village board, was caught using his cellphone while driving last month. Sgt. Daniel Skaggs was parked in the driveway of a former village board member on Iles Avenue, looking for law breakers, when he spotted Lopez drive past, cellphone in hand. Skaggs followed Lopez to the intersection of Iles and MacArthur Boulevard, where he pulled alongside the board president and reminded him that it’s against the law to use a cellphone while driving. No ticket was issued. According to an incident report, Lopez told village police chief Craig Kennedy that he was wrong to use his cellphone while driving, and he also said that offi cers could no longer use the driveway to enforce traffi c laws. Kennedy confi rms that the driveway is off limits, and he’s not sure of the rationale. Still, the chief says, there are plenty of other homeowners on Iles Avenue who are happy to have cops parked in their driveways, particularly when no one is home. Lopez could not be immediately reached for comment. Kennedy says that the board president did not receive preferential treatment. “We don’t cite everybody for every infraction that we see,” the chief says. “If they’re causing a real traffi c problem, of course we’ll write tickets.”
