BOOKS | Gender in the world of Hogwarts
This Tuesday, enjoy a UIS ECCE Speaker Series presentation that features analysis and discussion on the gendering (masculine, feminine, androgynous or gender bent) of characters in J.K. Rowling’s beloved books, supplemented with excerpts from Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. The presentation and discussion will be led by Heather Dell, a member of the Women and Gender Studies department at University of Illinois Springfield, and winner of the Pearson Award for excellence in teaching. Dell will examine the ways in which girls and boys in Rowling’s world attempt to gain standing among peers, families and teachers; if Hermoine’s outspoken behavior would be considered more “acceptable” if she were a male, equality in sports via a look at Hogwart’s coed Quidditch team and more.
