There’s a new gallery in town! 1227 is located at 1227 S. Pasfield Ave., behind The Pharmacy. Five local photographers Lou Fremgen, Tom Handy, James Hawker, Greg Laun and John Record, a group known as Next Friday, having met the last Friday of the month for the past year to discuss photography and their work, will present their first group showing. Four of the five men have worked as professional medical photographers at SIU School of Medicine. Fremgen has also been an industrial and political photographer and recently retired as a photography instructor at Springfield School District 186. Handy is known for his images of underwater life, prairie and wetland ecosystems and has been publishing his work since 1999. Hawker has had photos in numerous public and private collections throughout the U.S. and national and international publications. Laun freelances for the State of Illinois, and along with Hawker is an original member of the Sixth Street Gallery, a Springfield photography gallery that was open from 1973-79.
