BAND SPOTLIGHT | Wir Können

Direct from somewhere around here comes “three guys who play music, sometimes sad, sometimes not,” with a name in German that means, “We Can,” complete with Germanic-styled umlaut and everything. Mostly Austin Connelly (guitar, vocals), Mitch Baker (guitar) and Avery Otten (drums) play birthday parties or at least they say they want to play birthday parties. At this show they’re on the bill with Dan Mariska and the Boys Choir from Minnesota and See Through Dresses from Nebraska, plus somebody named Mario Cannamela. Together since sometime around August of 2013, the tryin’ trio also likes “makin’ jokes and meetin’ folks” and promises to “try and make you sad and angry,” while suggesting that you “get your pregame tears on,” and you can just tell they mean it. They released a cassingle on Nov. 5 with the songs “Glow” and “Mani Pedi” through Patch Records, a Springfield-based imprint and classify themselves as “emo/sad-as-sh*t-core.” Everything is going to be just fine in 2014.
