Editor’s note
There was an air of inevitability at Tuesday’s rain-soaked marriage equality rally, as politician after politician took to the podium facing the Abraham Lincoln statue to declare, “It’s just the right thing to do.” Nobody was more adamant than Comptroller Judy Baar Topinka, the best kind of Republican, who said it’s time to get ’er done. U.S. Sen. Richard Durbin evoked Lincoln’s struggle to expand freedom, saying we who claim to occupy the Land of Lincoln should extend marriage rights to make freedom larger. Secretary of State Jesse White, who has been reluctant on this issue, had a coming out of his own by standing up to endorse the cause. State Rep. Barbara Flynn Currie said it’s a shame “New Joisey” beat us to become the 14 th marriage equality state, but Illinois can become the 15 th . Hope she’s right. –Fletcher Farrar, editor and publisher
