Editor’s note

Record-warm temperatures in January won’t last, but they’ve been enough to get Springfi eld’s gardeners and neighborhood activists together yearning for spring and planting time. A large group showed up at the Slow Food Film Festival Friday night, where the documentary Urban Roots, about Detroit’s agriculture movement, prompted an enthusiastic discussion about tilling vacant lots for community gardens here. Vera Garrett, a veteran of several seasons of gardening on vacant lots on East Miller, said growing things is a great way to bring neighbors together. People come in as many varieties as vegetables, so working the dirt together makes for a great salad. –Fletcher Farrar, editor and publisher
