If you watched Wednesday’s “American Idol” finale, you know what Jennifer Holliday is capable of doing. The famous actress and singer was scheduled to sing a duet with contestant Jessica Sanchez on the show, but Springfield will soon have a chance to see Holliday in person. Thirty years ago, Holliday was practically unknown when she stunned the theater world by belting out the now-classic Broadway tune “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going” during a 1980 run of the popular Dreamgirls musical. Her incredibly powerful and versatile voice channeled the greatest female soul icons of the 1960s, propelling her to lasting fame on the stage, on television, and in the recording studio. Soon, the Grammy and Tony Award-winning performer will make a special appearance in Springfield, presumably to sing some of the R&B hits, show tunes and gospel adaptations that made her a star. Holliday will visit the 300-seat Legacy Theatre, 101 E. Lawrence Ave., at 7 p.m. on July 7. “It is a rare opportunity to see a performer of Ms. Holliday’s caliber in such an intimate setting,” says producer Scott Richardson. “Our audience is in for a rare treat.” Holliday plans to do another run of Dreamgirls at the St. Louis Muny following her Springfield performance.
