Rep. Genius, and a kickback scheme gone awry
Appointed state Rep. Derrick Smith, D-Chicago, hasn’t been in the House very long, but few would ever have picked him as a future legislative star. He stumbles badly during debates, isn’t well informed on the issues and has obviously had a lot of trouble getting his arms around his new job.

Boycott cynicism and fear
First, I no longer donate money to national campaigns. I’m simply tired of paying for television advertising, especially since my wife and I canceled our subscription to cable television years ago. Instead, I donate my surplus resources locally to help my neighbors.

Not this time. Two days after Direct Air quit flying without notice, the airport board held an emergency meeting on March 14 and decided to go into the airline business, putting up $715,000 of public money to charter jets to make twice-a-week round trips to Fort Myers through April 28.

BOOK REVIEW | Mary Bohlen
Just when it is fashionable to bemoan the loss of bipartisanship in politics, along comes a book that waxes nostalgic for the days when legislators threw punches at each other. Former Illinois Senate President Philip J. Rock’s memoir, Nobody Calls Just to Say Hello,.

A bloody good thing
Their name may be a little off-putting. And their exterior, orange streaked or mottled with vermilion and/or brownish purple, may bring to mind a nasty bruise rather than something good to eat. However, the first sight and taste of blood oranges’ flesh reveal why they’re so sought after.

For the uninitiated, and that would be many readers over 25 years of age, Collins’ novel takes place in the near future where the United States has been divided into 13 districts, a move precipitated by a rebellion that broke out after a cataclysmic war left the nation in tatters.
