Q: What are the benefits of booking a back-to-back cruise?
A: Some folks who have the time for a longer cruise and who enjoy the 7-day itinerary, stay on the same ship for another 7-day journey. The financial benefits are questionable. The fares, the terms of sailing, the cabins are usually the same. However, depending on the cruise line and the time of the year, negotiations for a fare discount or some form of shipboard credit is entirely possible. Persistence is the key.

Q: How great is going to the Galapagos this year?
A:
Recommended by the New York Times as one of its best destinations in 2009, the Galapagos, off the coast of Ecuador, South America is a fabulous choice. Tourism is slated to be at a high pitch since 2009 represents the 200 th anniversary of Charles Darwin and the 150th anniversary of Darwin’s celebrated “The Origin of Species.” The book was inspired by Darwin’s travels to the area, which is inhabited by varied and unique wildlife. There will be an expedition led by Darwin’s great-great grandson, Randal Keynes, aboard a modern sailing vessel called the Beagle, named for Darwin’s original ship. This journey will be from June 7 to 17 and priced at roughly $5,000. Abercrombie & Kent is offering special cruises as well as Celebity’s regular sailings on its Xpedition.

Q: With the current economic perils, are there any inexpensive domestic trips available?
A:
No other city in America has been hit by the current crisis as dramaticlly as Las Vegas.

Foreclosures are at record highs and unemployment has hit about 8%. So Vegas is a sure bet for outrageous deals at hotels at all price levels. The new Trump has a room for $99 a night and the Wynn offers one for under $200 per night.

At the low end, there are rooms downtown going for $14 a night. Some rental cars can be had for $8.95 per day. For this money and fewer crowds that’s a real bargain.
