One Word One Vision One People Upbeat Note from the Publisher Ten Rules of Happiness (for every day): 1. Laugh often - laughter is life’s lubricant for the immune system. 2. Give thanks every chance we get; it changes our perspective. 3. Do our best. 4. Give something away - no strings attached. 5. Be kind. 6. Don’t get angry over silly things. 7. Forgive and forget – life is too short. 8. Do something fun for you - have hobbies and interests. 9. Call or spend time with a loved one. 10. Make the best of every moment. Every year the holidays present us with numerous opportunities to make choices. Much too often people choose unhappiness during this festive time, entertaining thoughts such as: “Everyone is too busy around the holidays to think about me. I live alone and have no one to share the holidays with. The holidays have sad memories for me.” If we adopt a “bah humbug” type of attitude, we will boost the number of sad memories we are having and attract more “bah humbug” experiences.
I think all of us have experienced moments when we have felt melancholy or depressed during the holidays. Sometimes we look back at the reason and laugh at our “silly-ness” for choosing our sad state. Other times we may be remembering a loved one who is no longer with us. We must realize that they would want us to be happy. Depression always begins with our thoughts and continues to get worse when we dwell on the negativity. The world we live in is determined largely by what begins in our mind and the action we choose to take following our thoughts. Marcus Aurelius, the great Roman philosopher and sage, said, “A man’s life is what his thoughts make of it.” Emerson, one of America’s foremost philosophers, said, “A man is what he thinks all day long. Make certain not to indulge in negative thoughts, defeatist thoughts, or unkind, depressing thoughts. When you feel like circumstances are bringing you down, change your thoughts and do something that makes you happy. Go to a movie, have dinner with a friend or neighbor. Surround your life with people who are fun to be with, love to laugh and bring out the best in you. I am thankful for the people in my life, my partner of 7 years, my wonderful Happy Herald staff and my friends and neighbors. They bring out the best me and I do my best to bring out the best in them. It is a wonderful time of the year to spend meals and conversations with loved ones and friends. Don’t be afraid to reach out to others during this holiday season.
