University at The Oaks: King John and the Magna Carta Guest Speaker: Cheryl White, PhD, associate history professor at LSUS

Monday, July 3, 4 p.m. Franks Community Centre Cheryl White’s monthly University at The Oaks series will focus on the Magna Carta, drafted by the Archbishop of Canterbury to bring peace between King John of England and a group of rebel barons. It was agreed to by King John on June 15, 1215.

Guest Speaker: Maredia Bowdon, retired English teacher Tuesday, July 25, 3:30 p.m. Chapel Maredia Bowdon returns to The Oaks with the second part of her two-part review of a fascinating portrait of the American presidency through the eyes of Secret Service agent Clint Hill. Hill reflects on his 17 years protecting Presidents of the United States, during which time he got a front-row seat to the Cold War, the Cuban Missile Crisis, the assassinations of John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy, the Vietnam War, Watergate and the resignations of Spiro Agnew and Richard Nixon. Cost: $5, nonresidents. Registration is required.

Julie Hartley, registered dietitian with Willis-Knighton Health System, will share information about how to recognize when you are on the verge of dehydration, ways to prevent dehydration and great tips about the benefits of remaining hydrated through water, whole-foods and plants. Have you ever wondered about all of the water options available? Seltzer, electrolyte, tap, spring, herb, fruit . . . which water is best? After the lecture, a “Water Tasting Station” will be available. Which water will you like?
