PUPPY RESCUE’S FUND-RAISER
Dog lovers can’t imagine life without a dog. Good, bad, old, sick, ugly, fat, we don’t care. Dog lovers are kind and generous people, and if anyone ever depended on the kindness of strangers, it is puppies abandoned or left in shelters, their mothers and pregnant dogs.

KEEPING DRUGS OUT OF THE WRONG HANDS
If they are disposed of, most people throw them out with the trash or flush them. Neither of these disposal methods are safe. A 2016 Environmental Protection Agency study of the 50 largest water utilities revealed that every sample tested positive for a least one prescription drug.

SCI-PORT SPEAKS OUT
Sci-Port is not closing. You may have seen reports about our recent audit. Sci-Port struggles as many nonprofits do, and a depleted economy does not help. We rely heavily on grant funding and donations to function.

WELCOME TO WASHINGTON
When Democratic Gov. John Bel Edwards addressed the Legislature at the beginning of the current session, he pleaded with legislators not to turn Louisiana into another Washington, D.C. He was referring, of course, to the partisan politics playing out on the national stage.

WASTED POTENTIAL?
You have probably heard it said that the average person uses only 10 percent of his or her potential. Some studies say that most people function with only about 2 percent of his or her mental potential. The remainder just sits there in reserve, being saved for some later time.

HEALTHY MOTHERS, BABIES, EYES
“The eyes are the window to the soul.” Just as one can often tell a great deal about a person by looking at their eyes, pediatric ophthalmologists can often look inside the eye and see a great deal about serious infections that can be affecting your baby’s eyes.

EMPOWERING CHILDREN

HEALTHY GEEZER
My friend, Pete, has instituted a colonoscopy rule. He insists that, if a bunch of us geezers are talking about aches, maladies and visits to the doctors, everyone has to change the subject as soon as someone uses the word colonoscopy. Usually, we switch to grandchildren, which is a lot more fun.

at HOME
The house has a long history that began after the Civil War. Mr. W.H. North, who migrated from the north to the Red River Valley during Reconstruction, originally built it in the 1880s. He purchased 4,000 acres of prime cotton land in the depressed economy and built the house on a bluff overlooking the Red River.

Embracing Art
There is a lushly rendered painting of a shaman by Marilyn Couch and an exquisitely detailed sculptural head by Mark Burt. There is Talbot Hopkins’ pensive self-portrait, her face strikingly illuminated by firelight. Kedrick Williams has made a portrait of the iconoclastic recording artist Frank Ocean, drolly titled “St.
