University at The Oaks

Monday, Feb. 6, 13, 20 and 27, 5 p.m. Tower Ballroom The Oaks of Louisiana’s popular four-week University at The Oaks series returns for its spring edition this month. The series will focus on the behaviors, antics and legacies of some of Britain’s famous leaders. Topics are: “Emperor Claudius: The Invasion of Britain” (Feb. 6); “Hammer of the Scots: The Reign of King Edward I” (Feb. 13); “The Great Harry: The Life of Henry VIII” (Feb. 20); and “Saving Britain: Sir Winston Churchill” (Feb. 27).

Cost: $25 for the series, nonresidents. Registration is required.

The Hamilton Affair

Guest Speaker: Jacqueline Gore Tuesday, Feb. 21, 3:30 p.m. Chapel Jacqueline Gore returns to The Oaks with an entertaining review of Elizabeth Cobbs’ novel “The Hamilton Affair.” It is the telling of the riveting true story of Alexander Hamilton and Elizabeth Schuyler – he an American statesman and one of the Founding Fathers of the United States, she a wealthy, beautiful and adventurous daughter of a distinguished family.

Mardi Gras Mambo: Festival Facts & Flavor Guest Speaker: Suzan Shofner, Krewe of Centaur, and Oaks of Louisiana chefs Thursday, Feb. 23, 3 p.m. Tower Ballroom Let the good times roll at Mardi Gras Mambo! You are invited to pass a good time as The Oaks of Louisiana spreads a little Mardi Gras magic. Revel in Carnival history as you learn the origins of the festival, the symbolism of the official colors and more. Adding to the flavor of this festive event will be a food demonstration and tasting of such South Louisiana favorites as New Orleans barbecue shrimp, muffalettas and fried oysters. Cost: $5, nonresidents. Registration is required.

Guest Speaker: Dr. John Noles, pain management and spine specialist Friday, Feb. 24, 2:30 p.m.

Franks Community Centre Dr. John Noles will discuss the underlying causes of back pain and available invasive and noninvasive treatments and therapies. He will also share state-of-the-art rehabilitation options for outpatient care. Cost: $5, nonresidents. Registration is required.

Guest Speaker: Linda Porter, member of Krewe of Centaur and former Louisiana history teacher Friday, Feb. 24, 3 p.m. Tower Ballroom Linda Porter is considered an authority on all things Louisiana, having taught Louisiana history for more than 40 years. She will visit The Oaks of Louisiana, along with other members of the Krewe of Centaur, for a fun and informative program on Mardi Gras. Cost: $5, nonresidents. Registration is required.
