Sleepy Hollow: Sleepy Hollow Books & Gifts opened its doors Sept. 5 at 442 Olive St. Customers enjoyed special pricing on Zombee Candle & Coven Co. products, including ZC’s Autumn line of Zombees. Hocus Pocus, Hallowed Ground, L’Automne, Cornucopious, and Tiff-R-Treat returned for this festive event. For the past five years, Zombee Candle has become a staple at local craft and maker fairs and at The Agora Borealis. The offshoot Coven Co. expands the selection to body butter, lip balm and body spray.

Pour Off: The inaugural Red River Margarita Pour Off featuring Jose Cuervo and 1800 went on under cloudy skies Sept. 6 at Mall St. Vincent’s parking lot. The competition was between restaurants and bars in Shreveport-Bossier City. Country Tavern took home a cash prize, WWE champion belt and title for best margarita in Shreveport- Bossier City. There was also a salsa dance competition. Participants included Nicky’s, W’s Steak House, Boomtown, Santa Fe Cattle, Fast Eddie’s, Zocolo, Roma Italian Bistro, River City Grille, Wine Country Bistro, Ta Molly’s, Margaritaville, Chili’s, What’s on Tap, Chimi V’s, Twisted Root Burger, The Office and Bears on Fairfield.

Retirement Party: A retirement party for Doris Bowman, a longtime employee of the Salvation Army, was held Sept. 11 at the Salvation Army. She has worked at the Shreveport office for 26 years and in the Salvation Army a total of 47 years, having been an officer with the rank of major. Bowman was Saints Alive! senior group coordinator and kitchen supervisor.

Oliver North: It was appropriate that Bossier and Caddo Crimestoppers held an evening of patriotism and reflection with special guest and keynote speaker Col. Oliver North on Sept. 11. He spoke on events of that day and heroes. VIP guests got to meet North before the event and have a photo taken with him. It was held at Sam’s Town.

Pageant 4 Paws: Flying Heart Brewing in Bossier City hosted Pageant 4 Paws on Sept. 20. Pups of all breeds and rescue dogs participated as contestants. Vogue Photo Booth offered a special opportunity for the owners to pose with their pets. Pawtasic Grooming and Totally Barking Treats also participated. Jester Catering was onsite offering food for sale. Ninna Lopez, founder/director of Ninna’s Road to Rescue, emceed the pageant and brought several volunteers to assist with the event. Winners were named in categories: Swimwear, Sports Fan, Glitz and Glam. Mr. and Mrs. Congeniality were named and voted on by the audience. The Top 5 dogs competed in an interview segment. The Grand Supreme winner was Bruce, who wowed the judges in his swim cap and speedo.
