Hospital emergency rooms are no one’s idea of a place to spend much time-if any. Only in an emergency, right?
There is now a growing trend in health care these days that give patients a more expeditious option.
One such option on the local scene is Urgent Care of Louisiaina at 6841 Fern Avenue, Suite 100 in Shreveport.
Urgent Care of Louisiaina is owned in partnership by Dr. Paul Bracey and Dr. Chris Wolcott and has been open and serving the community’s medical needs since August of 2011. Dr. Bracey and Dr. Wolcott are long-time friends since their first year of medical school, who share a commitment to providing quality health care to their patients…with an emphasis on care.
In addition to his schedule at Urgent Care of Louisiaina, Dr. Wolcott, is also an Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine at University Health Hospital in Shreveport. Dr. Bracey and Dr. Wolcott are both Board Certified in Emergency Medicine. Both are Fellows of the American College of Emergency Medicine.
“I feel we are both adept at identifying problems. We strive to identify and evaluate true emergencies,” said Dr. Bracey.
“I think one thing that separates us from most other such operations, is that we really want the patient to understand their situation. That makes them a stronger part of the solution and they leave with a deeper sense of satisfaction that we communicated with them in a manner that is respectful,” said Dr. Wolcott.
“We are qualified and capable of treating most conditions that walks through our doors; however, if a true emergency presents to our clinic that warrants the capabilities and equipment of an emergency room we can immediately arrange a smooth transition to the hospital. In the rare cases where this is required, we will always call ahead to expedite this process.
“It may be a bit clichéd, but we want to treat a patient the way we would expect to be treated,” Dr. Wolcott said.
“We take the time to talk and listen to the patient. Often, that gives us information that avoids unnecessary testing,” said Dr. Bracey.
The Urgent Care of Louisiaina staff has a shared vision from the doctors.
“Even our employees understand that we are here for the patient, that is our focus and drive,” said Dr. Bracey.
But if certain tests are required in order to complete a diagnosis, Urgent Care of Louisiaina has many in-house capabilities. Lab work and blood work as well as x-rays can be handled efficiently right in the clinic, while CAT scans, Ultrasounds and MRIs can easily and quickly be referred out to a nearby facility. Many times these can be completed on the same or next day.
To Dr. Bracey the appeal of working in emergency medicine is multi-faceted.
“I am attracted to the diversity of presentations we get on a daily basis. And, it is also rewarding to be able to see the often immediate impact we can have on a patient’s health,” said Dr. Bracey.
The 4,000 square foot clinic was built with expansion in mind.
“We would only want to expand if we can be assured of keeping the high quality of consistent medical care, never growth for growths sake,” Dr. Bracey said.
“I followed a circuitous route to emergency medicine. I started out with a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering with the plan to go on to Law School, before detouring into the medical field. I spent one year in internal medicine at University Health in Shreveport and then spent three years in Emergency Medicine in Jackson, Mississippi at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. In my last year in Mississippi I was chief resident,” said Dr. Bracey “Our constant goal is to treat our patients with respect and with the utmost in professionalism. Dr. Wolcott and I are both home town guys who are here back home as a labor of love to help people in this community where our roots are,” Said Dr. Bracey.
Dr. Bracey has set down roots in Shreveport-Bossier with his wife Heather and their four children, twins Emly and Ethan (13), son Noah (11) and son Nate (10).
At Urgent Care of Louisiaina, every patient will get a full evaluation and have the findings explained to them in a fashion that the layman can understand.
“Coming from teaching, we work hard to stay up with current developments in the medical field so we can give you confidence that your diagnosis will be accurate and that your treatment will be the best opton for your circumstances,” Dr. Bracey said.
“We have price menus on all our services and that is something that we always discuss in detail with each patient so that there are no surprises,” Dr. Wolcott said.
Follow up is another component of the high level of patient care offered by Urgent Care of Louisiaina.
“After we see someone in the clinic, we follow up with a check-up call within three days,” said Dr. Bracey.
Some of the most frequent problems presented to the doctors at Urgent Care of Louisiaina include respiratory illnesses such as pneumonia, appendicitis, broken bones and cuts. However, their care is not limited to just these situations, so no matter what your medical dilemma, you can have confidence that Urgent Care of Louisiaina will be able to diagnose your ailment and treat it.
“We have had numerous patients we have treated who have asked if we could become their Primary Care doctors. That is the highest compliment I can imagine receiving,” said Dr. Wolcott.
