Guest Speaker: William “Billy” S. Hummer, beekeeper and co-founder of Hummer & Son

Friday, Aug. 15, 2:30 p.m. Ballroom, Tower at The Oaks What began in 1985 as a 4-H project with father and son has turned into a company that produces more than 50,000 pounds of pure Louisiana honey a year for businesses in the Ark-La-Tex. Hear the story of Stanley F. Hummer and son, William S. Hummer, and their 30,000 to 50,000 bees. Cost: $5, nonresidents. Registration is required.

Book Review: The Aviator’s Wife

Guest Speaker: Jacqueline Gore

Tuesday, Aug. 19, 3:30 p.m. Alta and John Franks Community Centre Popular book reviewer Jacqueline Gore shares this fictional biography – “The Aviator’s Wife” – based on the experiences of an extraordinary woman – Anne Morrow. Morrow’s story is one of a young naïve girl who marries world famous aviator Charles Lindbergh. She endures a journey through a difficult marriage and the kidnapping and murder of her firstborn child, but is able one day to step from behind her husband’s shadow. Cost: $5, nonresidents. History of Italian Opera: An Afternoon with SOX

Guest Speaker: Steve Aiken, Shreveport Opera general/artistic director, and SOX

Thursday, Aug. 28, 2 p.m. Ballroom, Tower at The Oaks Steve Aiken will discuss highlights of great Italian opera and members of Shreveport Opera Xpress, the education and outreach program of Shreveport Opera, will entertain with selections from “La Bohème,” “Tosca” and “Madame Butterfly,” among others. This informational performance is part of The Oaks’ yearlong Passport to Health series that incorporates programs and events related to a different country each quarter. Cost: $5, nonresidents. Let’s Talk: Improving Functional Independence with Speech Therapy

Guest Speaker: Linda Baker, MA, L-SLP, CCC-SLP

Wednesday, Aug. 20, 2 p.m. Alta and John Franks Community Centre Linda Baker, speech therapist with The Oaks of Louisiana, will address the benefits of speech therapy to improve functional independence for individuals with neurological conditions. Neurological conditions addressed will include dementia, cerebrovascular accident, Parkinson’s disease, ALS, head injury, and communication issues that most commonly affect middle-aged and geriatric populations. Cost: $5, nonresidents. Registration is required.

Wednesday, Aug. 20, 6 p.m. Ballroom, Tower at The Oaks Heavy industrial traffic, public safety and the future route to the Port of Caddo-Bossier are on the minds of locals in Shreveport-Bossier. Elliott Stonecipher, of the 3132 Coalition, will share his thoughts on the La. Highway 3132 extension project as guests enjoy fine dining in the Oak Room at Tower at The Oaks. Stonecipher also will discuss the impact of U. S. Senate and Gubernatorial elections on state politics and government, post-Katrina/Rita. Cost: $25, nonresidents. Registration is required.

The multifaith spiritual activities at The Oaks of Louisiana and the Chapel at The Oaks are open to all who wish to be a part of a meaningful experience. The Rev.
