Most of you probably don’t give a second thought to how your ceiling looks, but actually, it is generally the largest unobstructed “wall” in your home. It is a great opportunity to highlight architecture or add a much-needed punch to a room without committing yourself to a particular color or treatment.

At Space: interiors, we love our ceilings! Whether painted, wallpapered or a combo of both, it always enhances our rooms and thrills our clients. They don’t have to be bright colors either. “Accessible Beige” by Sherwin Williams is a beautiful neutral which goes really well with whites, creams, taupes and grays. I would like to officially dismiss the myth that painting your ceiling darker makes your room look smaller. It’s actually the opposite, especially with darker colors like black and navy. It instantly elevates the mood or vibe or your room and separates you from the “sameold, same-old” we see daily. We believe it is always better to stand out than blend in. Treating or highlighting just your ceiling introduces an accent color, texture or pattern without immersing the room. We have been in several homes where entire rooms are painted little girl pink, or little boy blue (or purple ... yikes). These rooms are now committed to these colors well beyond when the children have outgrown the color. Had the walls been painted white or another lighter neutral, and only the ceiling painted, it would cut back on a lot of time/money spent changing the whole room. The secret of painting your ceiling is to introduce the color into your decor via rugs, pillows, art, etc.

If you are feeling especially adventurous, try some wallpaper up there. With so many options now available in the wonderful world of wallpaper, there is definitely something for everyone. It is not “coming back,” it is back and ain’t going anywhere anytime soon! Patterned, textured, printed, graphic or photorealistic, the choices are seemingly endless.

The overall success we’ve had in ceiling treatments has solidified our confidence that it is here to stay.

Stay positive. Things are looking up at your beautiful ceiling!
